Science-Based Water Targets for Sustainable Agricultural Practices

Science-Based Water Targets for Sustainable Agricultural Practices

Enhancing watersheds health around the World

Agriculture is the largest consumer of freshwater resources globally and plays a significant role in decreasing the quantity and quality of water available for the local communities. Mismanagement of water sources can lead to water scarcity, environmental degradation, and business risks.

The Challenge

Antea Group’s client in the Food & Beverage manufacturing has established agriculture-related goals that support enhancing watershed health, in addition to other sustainability-related goals. The client has focused its effort and resources on High Water Risk (HWR) agricultural regions, identifying five priority HWR agricultural regions for detailed assessment.

Antea Group in Action

Antea group carried out detailed Basin Assessment for the five priority basins. The key data collected  was used as inputs to support the Client in setting realistic and achievable Science-based targets for water.

The results

The Basin Assessments provided a comprehensive overview of the hydrology and hydrogeology of each region and evaluated the vulnerabilities of the region’s water sources in the relevant watershed. In addition, water relevant stakeholders were mapped and prioritized, followed by a legal overview of present and future legislation for relevant water-related topics.

The Basin Assessments enabled a robust understanding of the current and future state of each growing region to support the client in setting meaningful impact objectives and, implementing programs/partnerships that will deliver positive change.

Key Outcome

Proposal for interventions to achieve the environmental objectives of the Common Agricultural Policy: "To promote sustainable development and efficient management of natural resources such as water, soil and air".
