Implementing Nature-Based Solutions in Industrial sites

Kerala, the southernmost state in India, is located between the Arabian Sea to the west and the towering Western Ghats to the east. It is also networked by 44 interconnected rivers. Known for its social welfare and high quality of life, Kerala has consistently ranked first on the Sustainable Development Goals of India Index for three consecutive years (2018, 2019, and 2020).

As part of the different initiatives of the Kerala Government to develop the industrial ecosystem in the state, Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development (KINFRA) has identified multiple sites for the development of Industrial parks in Kasargod, Ramanattukara, Beypore, and Perumbavoor.

The challenge

Being on the shoreline, Kerala has extensive rainfall throughout the year. The Ramanattukara industrial park site is waterlogged and has standing water for at least 9 months. The Perumbavoor site, a brownfield, is adjoining the Periyar river and presently has an old textile industrial unit. The Kasargod site has a steep slope, and it is the client’s desire to have the site negotiated with minimum site grading.

The solution

For each site-specific challenge, Antea Group India provided solutions based on the natural features of the ecosystem in order to mitigate risks and build sustainability.

In Ramanattukara, existing wetlands will be retained both to conserve the existing drainage channels and to act as sponges to catch the rainwater. The same rainwater will be re-circulated for use after treatment within the industrial park. Peripheral drains are planned for the entire park to catch rainwater and supplement the wetlands for harvesting and subsequent use.

In Perumbavoor, a 100-meter green buffer is planned, adjoining the Periyar river, to segregate the industrial activity from the river ecosystem and maintain the existing ecological balance. Planned industrial park will have a treatment system with zero liquid discharge.

In Kasargod, Antea Group kept the cost of infrastructure development to the minimum by adopting land terracing considering that the site gradient is steep.

Antea Group in action

Our key tasks were as follows:

Market study on the industrial sectors,
Financial feasibility study,
Feasibility study for external infrastructure (power, road, water, etc.),
Detailed survey and investigations,
Preparation of the Master Plan,
Preparation of coordinated service plan,
Preparation of Base Maps (in CAD and GIS),
Land Suitability Assessment Report,
Preliminary drawings, including 3D views,
Preparation of tentative execution schedule,
Risk analysis,
Rough cost estimate for total development,
Rough cost estimate including external infrastructure cost.

Social & Environmental footprints

This project aims to provide multiple benefits to the local community and the environment, which include:

  • Creation of job opportunities for locals,
  • Serviced industrial land, including the treatment of solid and liquid waste at unit level,
  • Enhance the State and local economy,
  • Sharing of technical skills with locals,
  • Protection of the Periyar river and conservation of flora and fauna thanks to the future 100-meter green belt in Perumbavoor Park.
