Traffic Management in Madrid, Spain

Conducting studies and drafting technical reports related to traffic and information management

The proposed solution for this project was the provision of a high added-value team of experienced experts to work with the General Directorate of Traffic in the Traffic and Transport management area and to provide technical support to the DGT in different areas.

Mission

The purpose of this contract was to draw up studies and various technical reports related to variables of the traffic managed by the Madrid Traffic Management Centre, and to achieve the required knowledge on the behaviour of traffic at the accesses to the main cities covered by the Madrid TMC.

The final goal was to aid decision-making for the Contracting Management by recognising and determining all the variables that may influence mobility on the roads. To do so, all the required variables that affect the behaviour of the road traffic such as the traffic density (total, average daily density, etc.), travel times and speeds, service levels, traffic jams, road safety, etc. were analysed.

Provided Services

The technical solution proposed for this project was the provision of a high added-value team of experienced experts to work with the General Directorate of Traffic in the Traffic and Transport management area and to provide technical support to the DGT in the following areas:

  • Support for the Traffic Management Centre:
    • Mobility and road safety studies and reports, and intelligent transportation system (ITS) units
    • Support for processing works permits in the area of influence of the Madrid Traffic Management Centre.
    • Reengineering, process systematisation and technological development of IT applications.
  • Support for management of fixed speed cameras:
    • Studies and reports on speed camera management
    • Support for management of fixed speed cameras nationwide
    • Reengineering, process systematisation and technological development of IT applications.
  • Support for infrastructure management:
    • Mobility and road safety studies and reports, and ITS units
    • Drafting of ITS equipment projects.
    • Microsimulation oriented to traffic management and road safety-related decision-making.

For that reason, the project work team was really a much more extensive team of people backed by experience in the execution of traffic management projects for the General Directorate of Traffic over the years and in the full range of areas of knowledge that these systems require.
