Detailed preliminary design of the Port Centre El Hamdania in Cherchell, Algeria

Port Centre El Hamdania in Cherchell, Algeria

To boost regional trade, the government of Algeria has decided to build a new commercial port at El Hamdania near Cherchell. When completed, the port will connect Algeria to other African nations, Europe, Southeast Asia and America. It will handle 6.5 million containers and 26 million tons of goods annually.

The purpose of the assignment was to create the most favorable conditions for the port’s construction, taking into account the site’s exposure to the maritime climate, which includes the building of a new, 4km breakwater.

Antea Group (in joint venture with Ramboll) was commissioned to produce the design and supervise the construction works of the port and the greater logistics area. As part of this contract, Antea Group provided advice to the Algerian government on different aspects of the project, from the design phase to suitable solutions for the port’s construction.

Provided solutions by the consortium

  • Examination and verification of existing data: basic data, socio-economic conditions, local investigations (topography, bathymetry, utilities, geotechnics, wadis, quarry materials).
  • A technical and economic study of the project: socio-economic environment, commercial investment environment, freight flow analysis, scope of the project, port management plan, business plan.
  • Simulation and modelling studies: numerical and physical modelling, manoeuver simulation studies, update of the environmental impact assessment, energy and water needs.
  • Detailed preliminary design: basis of design; detailed study of the port (protection works, berths, soils and foundations, dredging and reclamation, revetments, utility networks, roads and train network, buildings, wastewater treatment, landscape management); detailed study of the logistic zone (earthwork plan, utility networks, road access and network); hydraulic study of 2 wadis; study of potential quarry deposits; site facilities plan and planning; and quarry installation plan.
