Antea Group won a World Bank project for engineering two road sections of the E60 intercontinental highway between Tbilisi (the capital of Georgia) and the borders of Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Since the 1st of March, a team of Antea Group experts has settled in Tbilisi. The Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia commissioned to Antea Group the preparation of a feasibility study and a detailed design for the upgrading of Rustavi-Red Bridge and Rustavi-Sadakhlo roads in Georgia. This project is carried out by Antea Group in a consortium with our subsidiary Unihorn India and Georgian partners PMCG and Sakgzametsniereba.

The project is funded by the World Bank and has a duration of almost a year. The study consists of an alternative alignment analysis and feasibility study for the two highways. All disciplines are involved in the preliminary design phase to find the most viable alignments through the rough terrain of Georgia. New traffic surveys and state of the art aerial surveys will be used to determine the most economic viable alignments while taking into account the environmental and social economic impacts. Once the preferred alignments are selected, our team will also prepare detailed engineering designs and the FIDIC contract documents. By the end of July the team hopes to start this second phase, so the bidding procedures can start before the end of the year.

Rustavi-Red Bridge road and Rustavi Sadakhlo road

The Rustavi-Red Bridge road (length approx. 35 km) is part of E-60 Highway and the main road connecting Georgia to Azerbaijan. The Rustavi-Sadakhlo road (length approx. 60 km) is a corridor connecting Georgia and Armenia. These dual carriage highways require upgrading to connect the transit corridor E-60 Highway from the South of Tbilisi to the borders of Azerbaijan and Armenia. Two main rivers and a mountain range have to be crossed on unstable ground.
This study is funded by the World Bank as one of the components of the on-going Forth East-West Highway Improvement Project (EWHIP-4). The Government of Georgia is committed to complete the East West Highway Project by 2020. The East -West Highway is a strategic project in the Government’s effort of transforming Georgia into a transport and logistics hub for trade between Central Asia and the Far East on the one hand, and Turkey and Europe on the other. Connecting the East-West Highway to the main border crossing points is becoming a critical part of Georgia to enhance its role as a transit country along the Silk Road.
